Here on our beloved planet, we’re struggling with tons of preparations to send our very own kind to the Red Planet but, by the look of things, it seems that someone might have gotten there already and you won’t believe your eyes what you see: The Starfleet!

Don’t freak out, it’s not about aliens or similar things, but the Star Trek Starfleet logo has just been spotted on the Red Planet, and that’s a fact. You can check it out for yourselves in the photo below.

Now, leaving the jokes aside, in the expanse of the Hellas Planitia, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has photographed a huge formation in the shape of the organization’s famous chevron logo.

“Enterprising viewers will make the discovery that these features look conspicuously like a famous logo,” wrote Ross Beyer of the University of Arizona in a statement which came out together with the photo release.

So hold your horses because unfortunately, this isn’t any evidence of intrepid explorers being able to go where no man has gone before. “It’s only a coincidence,” Beyer said.

The shapes are common on Mars

It also seems that these shapes are not something strange on the Red Planet, and they are usually the result of flow which has been happening a lot also in the past.

The particular chevron sign is reportedly a product of a volcanic eruption that took place at the bottom of an impact basin a really long time ago.

“Here, the sand formed crescent-shaped dunes called barchan dunes, sculpted by the wind; as the lava flowed, it parted around them,” according to Science Alert.

It’s also been explained that when the lava cooled down and became hard, it did this around the dunes. The winds on Mars continued to blow and eventually, the sands of the dunes have scattered and left the lava behind.

These formations are called ghost dunes.
